A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to murder a child rescued from a river.

The boy was pulled from the River Irwell in Bury just before 16:30 BST, police said.

Officers said it was not clear how the child, who remains in a critical condition in hospital, came to be in the water.

Greater Manchester Police said investigations were under way.

Blackburn Street is currently closed at the junctions with Stand Lane and Radcliffe New Road, the force added.
